 It is with great pride that I announce that two teams (one women’s, one men’s)from South Africa are entering the 2012 Masters Futbol National Soccer Championships.

The tournament will be played July 10-15, 2012 at Northwest Soccer Park in Bellingham, Washington. The South African teams join the Tokyo Seniors from Japan to add a strong international favor to the event.

The organizers of the MFC first met the Soccer Grannies from South Africa in Massachusetts in 2010 right after the World Cup finished in their home country. Beka Ntsanwiki, the organizer for Soccer Grannies, contacted us recently and asked if her team could participate in the 2012 MFC and along with the Soccer Grandpas. We extended a formal invitation to them, which they have accepted. Beka can be seen in the picture below second from the left.

The 2012 MFC will be played at Northwest Soccer Park in Bellingham, Washington. The dates of the event are July 10-15, 2012. The park has played host to four national USASA tournaments in the past fifteen years.

The complex features 12 grass fields, with the entire tournament played at one location.  A beer garden and a spectacular view of Mount Baker. The location is close to the Seattle, the San Juan Islands, whale watching, wineries, some of the best microbreweries on the plant and oh yes -  Victoria and Vancouver, BC.

Why the Masters Futbol Cup National Soccer Championships?

Extra Game Guarantee -Each team is guaranteed three – 90 minute matches, with up to five matches possible if a team makes the final. We also have the extra game guarantee: if your team is eliminated after preliminary round play and you wish to play an additional match, so long as you can find an opponent, the additional game free compliments of the tournament.

No Cross Division games because of a lack of teams – The Masters Futbol Cup will only run team brackets that are viable. Teams are not required to play crossover games with other age brackets. In 2011 we had 0-30, 0-40, 0-50, 0-55, 0-60 and 0-65 brackets for women, with men’s0-30, 0-40, 0-55, 0-60 and 0-65 brackets. The top two finishers in each of these brackets received prize money.

Tournament Party for participants – A party for tournament participants will be held on Friday night at Northwest Soccer Park.

Prize Money – the top two teams in each division receive a cash prize based upon the number of participants in each division.

Experience Counts - This event is sponsored by the Idaho State Soccer Association and the Washington State Adult Soccer Association. It is run by the most experienced adult tournament administrative team in North America. Paul Scherer and Tim Busch are Co-Chairs of the event, along with Lance Calloway from the Whatcom Sports Commission, Robin Gordon of the WSASA Office, Janet Slausen, WSASA Life Member, Linda Rimmer, WSWSA President, Kit Logue, WSASA Treasurer and Donnie Roberts and Betty Schmeck from the Washington State Referee Committee.

The Masters Futbol Cup Co-Chairs Paul and Tim spent this last weekend in San Diego attending to soccer business including visiting with our friends from San Diego. From left to right in the picture are: Paul Scherer, Jacquie Burt, Cindy Palenske, Aiko Johnston, Jany Staley and Tim Busch. All the ladies in the picture played in the 2011 Masters Futbol Cup in Lacey, Washington and will be returning with teams in 2012.

The Masters Futbol Cup has jumped to 45 teams with the inclusion of :

Steve Schmidt and the Olympia Stubbies in the men’s over-30 division.

Robin Gordon and I are working on finalizing the game schedule as soon

as possible. When the schedule is completed it will be sent to you. Also,

a fourth team will be added to both the men’s and women’s over-40

divisions.
